Mizuno x Rijksmuseum

Mizuno x Rijksmuseum

To celebrate our Japanese heritage, we have once again collaborated with the Rijksmuseum to create 2 special edition shoes for the 2021 TCS Amsterdam Marathon. Taking inspiration from multiple elements within the Rijksmuseum’s Asian Pavilion which is home to a variety of sculptures, Buddhas, and kimonos, brings forth a harmonious mix between the Japanese tradition and a runner’s journey throughout the marathon.

Wave
Skyrise 2

The Wave Skyrise 2 represents Mizuno’s commitment to deliver the most comfortable experience to runners who enjoy soft cushioning with efficient energy return from landing to toe off. Featuring Mizuno’s best footwear technologies, MIZUNO ENERZY and MIZUNO WAVE, it is designed to make every run feel effortless.

The pattern on the heel of the Wave Skyrise 2 is called “Chidori” which means “Thousand Birds”. This bird pattern is a representation of both the Crane bird, but also a traditional kimono pattern.

The Art of Running

Japanese crane

The Japanese crane takes center stage in this version of the Contender, its slender silhouette soaring on a red backdrop, exactly like the original on show at the museum.

Red Mesh and Suede

The crane pattern is interspersed on the upper and tongue, playing hid and see among the red mesh and suede.

Chidori/ A thousand Birds

This bird pattern is a representation of both the Crane bird, but also a traditional kimono pattern. When these two meanings combine, it represents "Senba-tsuru" or "Thousand Cranes" a traditional act where a thousand crane birds are folded out of origami paper and put together to make a wish come true.

Contender

The Contender is one of the latest styles that has been brought back to life among Mizuno’s impressive archives. Straight from the 1995 running offering, this was an impressively lightweight, neutral trainer for entry level runners. Its design aesthetic created a fil rouge between the Sky Medal and the Mondo Control, and it still provides a counterpoint for their current iterations even now.

The crane pattern is interspersed on the upper and tongue, playing hid and see among the red mesh and suede.

The Contender will be available from September 2021 at selected retailers.
